Roger and Peggy Gerry’s story is one of resilience and unwavering dedication to preserving Roslyn, New York’s historic character.

Arriving in 1951, the couple recognized both the unique charm and pressing threats to the village's heritage. By founding the Roslyn Landmark Society in 1961, they launched a proactive campaign to protect Roslyn’s buildings and landscapes from encroaching development. Their collaborative spirit united local residents, historians, and preservationists, fostering a community-wide commitment to safeguarding Roslyn’s legacy.
The Gerrys’ vision was not simply about preserving buildings but about retaining Roslyn’s identity as a vibrant, historic community.
Through their passionate leadership, they inspired others to value the architectural heritage of the area. Figures such as architect Guy Ladd Frost were drawn to Roslyn’s preservation movement, transitioning from modernist inclinations to become advocates of historical authenticity under Roger’s mentorship. Local leaders, like Craig Westergard and John Durkin, who knew the Gerrys well, continue to build on their legacy, guiding Roslyn’s future while honoring its past.
Peggy’s attention to detail and Roger’s diplomatic approach made them a powerful force. From rallying residents to halt ill-conceived development to personally welcoming newcomers, the Gerrys instilled a sense of pride and responsibility. While some residents saw their dedication as strict, others appreciated the careful stewardship they modeled. In 1986, thanks to their work, Roslyn Village was listed on the National Register of Historic Places—a milestone in ensuring Roslyn’s charm would be protected.
The Roslyn Landmark Society’s continued projects, from restoring historic structures to supporting education and advocacy, are a testament to the Gerrys' enduring influence. Through these initiatives, Roslyn remains a place where the past is honored and the community’s connection to history is continually renewed. Today, the Gerry Foundation endowment and the society’s efforts ensure that their legacy will shape Roslyn’s heritage for future generations, standing as a reminder of the profound impact of dedicated community stewardship.
